Ocean freight, rail and land transport in one • new intermodal connection from the Port of Bremerhaven to Katy Wroclawskie

(Warsaw, 10 November 2009)  Schenker Sp. z o.o. has launched an intermodal connection which is a combination of one source solutions. This new service in the operator’s offer connects the German Port of Bremerhaven with the container terminal in Katy Wroclawskie. The customers’ goods which are imported via ocean from Asia, Australia and both Americas reach Lower Silesia by rail. After reloading in Katy Wroclawskie the goods are transported by lorries to a group of manufacturers and distribution centres in the region.

“Together with the creation in the structure of Schenker Sp. z o.o. the department of rail logistics one of our priorities has become the development of the possibilities of this sector”, explains Krzysztof Szarkowski, Director of Rail Logistics in Schenker Sp. z o.o.  “In the present economic situation customers pay even greater attention to access to economic solutions. The purpose of this connection is to provide customers with maximum benefits as a result of the availability and complexity of DB Schenker’s offer. By combining rail solutions with a powerful network of other types of transport we are capable of supporting our customers on their markets.”

Schenker Sp. z o.o, DB Intermodal Germany, DB Schenker Rail Polska S.A. and Schavemaker Cargo Sp. z o.o are responsible for the organisation of this undertaking. The train runs once a week, the journey lasts approx. 14-16 hours, the train capacity is over 80 TEU.

“The new connection was introduced to the offer of in Poland in response to the needs of importers and exporters from the technological cluster located in Lower Silesia and the companies from the economic zone located in the area of Wroclaw” explains Slawomir Krzyskow, Director of Rail Business Development in Schenker Sp. z o.o. “Intermodal service is 4-5 days shorter than ocean and then land transport of a container. Also ecological aspects act in favour of rail transport. Many companies in their strategies plan to reduce negative environmental impact, electric power consumption and to minimise noise level – our service constitutes a response to these needs.”

The rail logistics solutions of DB Schenker comprise among other things individually designed routes, a possibility to use one wagon or a group of wagons or to transport goods in blocked trains. It is also a coordination of the entire process – from the organisation of transport to final delivery to a consignee. Depending on the customers’ needs rail logistics offers a possibility of being combined with other means of transport together with reloading services, warehousing and distribution to final consignees.
